Creating a Psychologically Safe Environment
How do we create an environment where our players or students play and learn fearlessly?
An environment of fearlessness begins with psychological safety. Psychological safety is a term that was first researched and coined by Dr. Amy Edmondson, which led to her publishing a book entitled, The Fearless Organization.
In a business aspect, psychological safety exists when people feel their workplace is an environment where they can speak up, offer ideas, and ask questions without fear of being punished or embarrassed.
Psychological safety within an athletic team refers to the shared belief among team members that they can express their thoughts, ideas, and concerns without fear of judgment. It creates an environment where athletes feel comfortable taking risks, being vulnerable, and contributing to the team without the worry of negative consequences.
In an atmosphere that allows for psychological safety, athletes are more likely to share their insights, communicate openly, and collaborate effectively, ultimately fostering a sense of trust and cohesion within the team. Psychological safety not only enhances individual well-being but also plays a crucial role in optimizing team performance by promoting a culture of open communication and mutual respect.
When our kids, students, and players live in fear of losing something, they will be threatened easily and hold back on their performance. Our young student-athletes already experience enough threats to their psyche, without the adults being a threat to them. Our players will play fearlessly, when we can create an environment that supports them and provides them the freedom to “go for it.”
