Marrying Accountability and Responsibility
On July 15, 2024, The Daily Coach published an article titled, Accountability vs. Responsibility. It was an interesting read and got me thinking about how accountability and responsibility do not need to go against each other, but can be married together.
Do we want to be held accountable? Or Do we want to be able to be responsible?
Is there a third option where we can place accountability and responsibility together?
We can work to create space in our life for accountability and responsibility. We can be accountable to others while also being responsible for our performance.
Accountability to others increases our responsibility.
Since January 1, 2024, I have been part of a text group that started as four people and has grown to five people. We decided to do some type of exercise on a daily basis. Following this workout, we would post a simple screenshot of our workout into our thread. Each person’s workout was different, but something that related to their individual preference. One person would workout on an elliptical, one person typically did strength training, one chose running as their workout preference, and the 4th individual reinforced the others, but did not join in posting a workout on a daily basis. In August of 2024, a 5th person was added to this group text thread. Each time a workout was posted in the group, there was a simple “thumbs up” or “heart” of the workout given by the group members.
Each member of the group is responsible for their actions. Each member of the group made an individual decision to complete their workout.
How can we create responsibility from accountability?
I asked a question like this of the people in this workout group text thread and here are a couple quotes from their thoughts:
“This thread has been a constant nudge in the right direction on a daily basis…This thread has helped me remember I am not alone in my path.”
“I started this (text strand) for myself, but I’m enjoying the company of this journey.”
“This group has pushed me to do some new things and stretch myself physically. It’s truly a blessing to have others invested in my overall general health as I am and to be part of all of your journeys as well.”
“Seeing our own respective journeys and sharing joy of our respective accomplishments has brought a sense of togetherness in something that I have always viewed as private…being part of a journey with others has helped lessen the burden of the journey.”
For some, responsibility is a weight on their shoulders, when responsibility is actually a freedom that we are blessed to have in our life. Responsibility is defined by Oxford Languages as, “the opportunity or ability to act independently and make decisions without authorization.”
We are responsible for our life. We are responsible for our steps to better health. We are responsible for our work to be the best we can be.
Accountability creates responsibility.
Accountability is the nudge to what you know you should do.
Responsibility is acting on the nudge.
Accountability is enjoying the company of the journey.
Responsibility is doing work on your own.
Accountability is having others invested in you.
Responsibility is doing new or hard things to stretch ourselves, so the investment that others have made in us pays off.
Accountability lessens the burden of the journey by sharing it with others.
Responsibility is the ability to do the work in private as a result of sharing the burden.
When we can marry our personal responsibility to act independently with the accountability of a group of closely trusted partners, we have created a situation where greatness can be accomplished. The accountability within our group is supportive with standards. We have acknowledged the days that our workouts were a struggle and we merely accomplished an “X” on the calendar. We have also acknowledged those days when our workouts have felt like a million dollars.
As we enter 2025, we are responsible for our steps and our work. We can marry this responsibility with supportive accountability from a closely trusted group of advisors.
